Introduction

Microsoft Teams is the hub for teamwork in Office 365 that brings together people, conversations and content-along with the tools that the teams need-giving you the complete collaboration and communication solution.


Chats 

For communicating and sharing with a colleague or small groups, MS Teams has a Chat feature.  

Select the Chat icon on the main menu.


 


Chats can be one-on-one or a group conversation with multiple participants

To start a chat, simply select the New Chat icon a the top.


 

One-on-One Chat

 

Click in the To field to add the name of the recipient(s).


 

 

Select the text area below to start composing your message.  



You also have rich text editing options by clicking on the Format icon.


 

Once your message is composed, select the Send icon.



You can also pop-out chats for easier access and viewing while multi-tasking.

(Popping out the chat box allows you to have a separate window for that specific chat)




 

 

Group conversation with multiple participants. 


Group chats help groups of people communicate quickly when creating a team isn’t necessary.  Create a group chat with the team members that you collaborate with the most.  Group chats are also used for small custom projects and discussions.

 

Click in the To field to add the names of the recipients.




A chat can be given a name to clarify its intended purpose to the team.

  • You can name the group chat by clicking on the pen icon next to the names.





You can add more people to the group chat by clicking the Add icon.


You can also share Files with the group by clicking on the Files tab.



Using @ Mentions

You can use @mentions to notify a specific individual that you are in need of their assistance or if you wish to notify them regarding the conversation.  

  • Within the message you are typing, simply type @ then the person’s name and it will pull up their name on the system.  Then you can finish typing your message.  
  • Click send
  • Because they are mentioned in the message, they will receive a notification.


  • Because they are mentioned in the message, they will receive a notification.
  • When you receive an @mention in a conversation, you will see a red badge next to the message.
